The delta maintains a delicate balance with the sea due to heavy deposits of silt flowing from the Jokulsa a Dal River, preventing the seas encroachment. INTRODUCTION: Since 1983 inexplicably large numbers of dead and dying common l oons (Gavia immer) have been found along Floridas Gulf Coast. Under threat fr om acid rain, lake pollution, and human encroachment, their numbers are declini ng elsewhere as well. Lake acidification has resulted in fewer fish, the birds principal f ood. More insidiously, it increases the rate at which mercury in ponds is toxi fied, the poisonous methylmercury enters the food chain and is eventually inges ted by the loon. It attacks the birds nervous system, hindering its ability to feed and reproduce. ----- LEGEND: A tiny chick rides on the back of an adult loon, kept warm between the wings and safe from underwater predators as the parent swims across a pond . The adult is wearing its breeding plumage.

Devoted parents, mal e and female loons share incubation duties for some 28 days before the chicks hatch. Occasio nally loons will doggedly -- and indefinitely -- attempt to hatch a foreign obj ect, such as a seashell or an egg-shaped rock.

Digital Archive Japan / DAJ, Battle of Little Bighorn, Montana, USA, 25-26 June 1876 (c1900). Retreat of US 7th Cavalry battalions under Major Marcus Reno (1834-1889). The Little Bighorn was a crushing defeat inflicted on the US 7th Cavalry by Sioux and Cheyenne warriors commanded by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Renos detachment was forced to retreat after encountering a much larger force, but the troops commanded by General George Armstrong Custer were surrounded and killed to the last man in the action known as Custers Last Stand. The Native American victory only temporarily delayed the encroachment of white settlers onto their lands however.
